Summer Book Study

Ready to dive into scripture with new depth and a new lens to help you see things from a different perspective? Join us for an online book discussion of Peter Enns’ “How the Bible Actually Works”. Through the summer we will cover the book chapter by chapter with new questions posted weekly.

 TLDR (too long, didn’t read)

-          Read the Guidelines

-          Get Signed Up

-          Order the Book

-          Questions will start to post Friday May 9th

Those joining the group are asked to adhere to the following guidelines which are meant to promote an environment of active and open sharing:

-Please be kind in your interactions with other members of the group, especially if you disagree. We will tolerate no bullying, name calling, etc. Approaching each other with a sense of curiosity and asking questions to seek clarity goes a lot farther in helping each other grow than playing intellectual, moral, theological, or spiritual king of the mountain.

-You are asked to post at least once per week either in response to a question or asking a question of your own. To help discussion move forward it would be helpful to post at least 2 responses.

-In recognition that it is summer and people are taking vacations there will be some grace with posting, but if you do not post for three weeks, it will be assumed you have lost interest, and you will be removed from the group and will need to ask to be readmitted.

-If you have longer thoughts to express it will likely be easier to cut and paste them from a word file than to develop them on facebook.

This is the first time I have tried anything like this with First Lutheran so these guidelines may need to be amended as we go. I will make sure to post changes so the whole group is aware. Mostly I’m trusting you to be mature adults with an interest in the subject matter and we’ll go from there.

You can join the group by:

-Opening Facebook and going to First’s Facebook page (don’t just look up posts, but click on Fist Evangelical Lutheran Church in a post to make sure you are at the facebook homepage).

-Once there look for the menu that will have “Posts, About, Mentions, etc.”

-If “Groups” does not show on your screen, drop down the “More” menu and click “Groups”

-Next, click on “Summer Book Discussion” then click “Join Group”.

-I will be sent a message about your interest and let you in and you will receive confirmation that you are now a member.

The group is set to private so only members of the group will see what you post.

We will be going chapter by chapter and though I will make quote references I don’t think directing people to the exact spot in the exact same text is necessary for this study. However you prefer to read is fine. You can order the book from Amazon or wherever you prefer, and ereader or print will work out.

I will post the first set of questions on May 9th and will plan to have set up to auto post so if I am gone for a week you can still count on them arriving in a timely manner. I will ask several questions each week, I do not expect answers to every question, but put some thought into them and answer one or two that are calling your name.

If you have questions, reach out to Pr. Patrick at 308-532-0250
